London locationPortraits at the Barbican
Most people think of concrete when they think of the Barbican, and they're right. But to many who love urban architecture it's the high point of Brutalism, and Mat is one of them.
The textured walls, the sweeping curves that catch and bend the light, the walkways that run away to a vanishing point: there's a portrait in every corner. Give Mat an afternoon here and he sees a new photograph every few steps.
The Barbican is special to him for another reason. From the age of 15 he came to the arts centre on his own to hear jazz and classical concerts, and the place has stayed with him ever since.
